Drunk Soccer Bitches

Okay, what's more offensive: the title of this blog, or the "controversy"—instigated by the precious soul that is U.S. goalkeeper Hope Solo, who has never been in the center of a controversy before, ever—regarding some of the U.S. women's national team members being drunk on live television after having won gold in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing?

I, for one, nominate the title. (I, for one, am also embarrassed that it took so long to find this.) What I take great offensive to is the morality placed by the media on "national" athletes—anyone wearing red, white and blue, standing in front of cameras that broadcast out to the world. No, let me start again: I take offense to anyone placing morality anywhere on anyone, period. That said, I take no offense to Hope Solo being a touch of a dumb jock. She's the best at what she does and she knows it. There is no harm there. She has sort of loose lips, but tell me the name of a professional athlete who hasn't, at one point in his or her career, said something that wasn't instantly regretted.

I think we could be outraged, question decisions made and what have you, if, back then, four frigging years ago, the women suited up, pounded Budweisers (that great American beer!), and then took the pitch. Okay, then we could have a go. Then, Alan Abrahamson, we could talk about "judgment and accountability and responsibility and about the privilege of wearing Team USA’s uniform," because—come on—that would be a sincerely dumb thing to do.

Anyway, this is some clever stuff from KickTV:
